For a big chunk of my life I felt like I was born in the wrong generation. My brother and sister are 11 and 13 years older than me, respectively, and their influences made me feel like one of them instead of the bratty little kid I was. More so with my brother (who liked Van Halen, AC/DC, and Pink Floyd) than my sister (who listened to something something disco music). I felt like I should have been born in the early 1960s instead of a decade later in 1972.
Now, looking around with a geek’s eyes, I think maybe it should have been the other direction. Maybe I should have been born in 1982 or even later so I could grow up as a digital native surrounded by computers and smart phones.
My introduction to computers as a seventh-grader programming in BASIC on a Tandy TRS-80 at my junior high school was a little too late for to be 100 percent digitally native. But I picked up a love for computers and technology that I still have today. Born a few years later, I would have almost certainly gone into computer engineering or picked up some kind of programming. Now, I look at it feel like the old dog trying to learn new tricks.
I hope my brain isn’t so scabbed over that I can’t pick up a few new skills in 2012. I want to learn my way around source code files, to learn what works in Xcode and why.
Also, I want to learn how to draw, so there’s that. And there is the perpetual desire/need to write more.
